After learning all that we could from AncestryDna at that point, uploading the raw data to Gedmatch.com and pouring of the trees of the close matches, it seemed we had hit a brick wall.
Frankly, although there seemed to be a common surname among his closest listed cousins, they all didn't have that surname listed. There were others who seemed detached from that name altogether. We had a hunch, but that was all it was. We had no concrete evidence that my husband's father shared this surname.
Just Do It Already!
I had known about the Y-DNA testing offered through Family Tree DNA. It wasn't cheap. I knew there was a chance this type of test could break down the wall and help propell us forward in the journey. After about 6 months of investigation using AncestryDNA alone, I finally decided to surprise my husband with the Y-DNA test kit. Hoping we'd receive his results by his birthday. The simple kit came. It was just two swabs. We waited and WAITED. Four months actually. It took my complaining to actually get them to get his results back to us. Finally we got them!
Confirmation.
We were right! It turns out, my husband's father's family had a DNA project going with FTDNA
That common surname on Ancestry was indeed his father's family name.
Help.
Remember that 2nd cousin I mentioned? Well, turns out the ONLY man in their family who could be my husband's father was in her tree all along. But we couldn't see him because he is ALIVE! Ancestry family trees usually keep private all living people. His name had been there all along but we couldn't see him because of privacy settings. As soon as we notified this cousin of the DNA results she pointed us in the right direction. We did some more research and found some contact information! It was amazing moment after all of this time. The man who was most likely my husband's father was ALIVE!
My husband, fearless as he is, sent him an email.
