Old Fashioned Donut Recipe

Makes 14 Donuts, and holes.

Note: Different flours will yield wetter or dryer results, instructions for adjusting are included in the recipe. I used stone ground flour which absorbs more liquid. If you are using standard All Purpose Flour, you may have to add up to 1/4 cup more flour.

Ingredients

Oil for Frying (at least 1 quart, preheat while making dough)

2 Tablespoons Apple Cider Vinegar
2/3 cup milk
1/4 cup sour cream
4 tablespoons Butter (soft)
1 cup white sugar
2 egg (room temp)
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
4 cups sifted all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon Nutmeg or Cinnamon

Directions:

1. In a cup,  combine vinegar and milk,  set aside.

2. In separate bowl, thoroughly mix butter with sugar.

3. Add egg to butter mixture. Mix in sour cream

4. Add vanilla and milk/vinegar mixture. Add Salt.

5. Add flour and baking soda, and spice. Gently combine. Dough should be slighty tacky and rollable just slightly wetter than chocolate chip cookie dough. Not too wet or sticky. If dough is overly wet, add small increments of flour until dough can be gathered into a TACKY ball. If dough is too dry add milk 1 Tablespoon at a time. until dough is proper texture.

6. Flour working surface. Dump dough out onto surface and press out to 1/4" thickness. Cut with a round cutter or glass jar/cup. Use a smaller cutter or the cap to your vinegar (don to cut donut holes.

7. Fry until golden on each side.  Drain on a rack or on paper towels or a clean dish towel. Let cool.

8. Dip in glaze, powdered sugar, Cinnamon sugar, or your favorite topping.

Enjoy!
